While comic book adaptations fill movie theatres, the small screen is not being left behind. Last year opened the door to an unprecedented collaboration between the paid streaming content provider Netflix, and Marvel Television with the debut of its original series, ‘Daredevil‘.
After receiving immense praise, Season 2 of Marvel’s ‘Daredevil‘ introduced a brand new portrayal of an existing fan favourite character with the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal. (‘The Walking Dead‘)
Now, it’s been officially announced that Netflix has ordered a brand new spin-off Punisher series.
Marvel movies have done the never before seen aspect of creating an entire cinematic universe spanning over 11 films. Now Netflix and Marvel TV is creating their own small screen universe with shows like Marvel’s ‘Daredevil‘ and Marvel’s ‘Jessica Jones‘ being set in the same world. With more upcoming shows like ‘Luke Cage‘ and ‘Iron Fist’, ‘Punisher’ will be the 6th movie in Netflix stables of Marvel characters.
All these characters were originally set to culminate in their own super hero team up series entitled Marvel’s ‘Defenders’. How much the Punisher will factor into that series still remains to be seen. The sequence of release of the new show, whether it will appear prior to the team-up, during, or after it, is also uncertain.
Currently, the Marvel and Netflix slate of upcoming series sees the yet to be premiered ‘Luke Cage’, and the currently in production ‘Iron Fist’. Which sequence of these series will ‘Punisher’ is yet to be announced. Marvel is known to have a long term plan in all their tv and film releases. Given that this ‘Punisher’ series seems to be more of an after-thought due to the success of Jon Bernthal’s portrayal, concerns me in how the quality of their larger plans may be affected by it. Only time will tell I guess.
Marvel’s ‘Punisher‘ will see Jon Bernthal return to the role of Frank Castle. His performance as the tortured anti hero in the second season of ‘Daredevil‘ received rave reviews, as some even describe Bernthal’s as the definitive on-screen Punisher.
It’s worrying though, that the new ‘Punisher’ series was essentially bred out of the powerhouse performance by Bernthal in ‘Daredevil’ Season 2. So far, the Netflix series of shows, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been developed as a long term plan. There’s a larger picture to it all, and I can’t help but be concerned how a series like ‘Punisher’, developed as after the fact, will work into this larger universe, conceptualized before it. I guess only time will tell.
The new series will be helmed by ‘Hannibal‘ showrunner Steve Lightfoot with Bernthal returning as well. I’m sure we will see some other cameos by inhabitants of the Marvel / Netflix universe; maybe Rosario Dawson as Night Nurse, or an appearance by ‘Daredevil’ himself maybe? One can certainly hope.
Marvel’s ‘Punisher’ stars Jon Bernthal, executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, but currently has no release date.
