Marvel’s Cinematic Universe shows no signs of slowing or stopping. The creation of a massive universe full of superheroes, spanning multiple films, has become a business model that all other film studios are vying for, and with good cause. With ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ opening this weekend, let’s take a look at another Marvel movie property that is set to debut in November of this year.
Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange‘ is a movie introducing a new character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who’s origins and back story is seeped in magic; a plot device that has thus far been either unused, or glossed over in this movie universe. Take a look at the first Trailer for Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange‘.
For the casual comic book movie audience, Doctor Strange is an arrogant surgeon who loses finer motor function of his hands after a tragic accident. In an attempt to find his new purpose in life, Strange journeys all over the world. His journeys take him to to an ancient being who opens Strange’s mind to world beyond our own, and helps him find a renewed sense of purpose.
‘Doctor Strange‘ will mark the MCU’s entrance into an entirely new world, no pun intended. So far the Marvel movie-verse has been populated by science, technology, aliens, and even magic explained away as science, as evident in the ‘Thor‘ films. But this time around, the mystical forces of energy and good vibrations will make their way into this world changing it completely.
With Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, the film also marks the first time that an actor with such off-screen popularity has been cast in the role of a new super hero character, since Robert Downey Jr. in ‘Iron Man‘. Cumberbatch has the appeal and acting talent to carry this franchise for many more years, as well as be the glue that holds the magic realms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe together for other characters and films.
The Trailer does a fantastic job of providing just enough story, action, mind bending CGI graphics and glimpses of its star cast to excite not just comic fan boys, but general audiences alike. After 12 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, movies that exist on their own within this world, are refreshing and free of the baggage of the other films.
The creepy and surreal elements of the story need a director suited to handle them. Therefore Director Scott Derrickson is perfect for the job of ‘Doctor Strange‘, given most of his previous films have been successful horror movies like ‘Sinister‘. Given his background, this director seems strangely (no more puns I swear) comfortable with the subject matter, and should be able to bring his own perspective to the film.
If ‘Doctor Strange’ is successful, Cumberbatch may just be the actor around whom a brand new tentpole of characters and films can be created, similarly how Robert Downey Jr. in ‘Iron Man‘ kickstarted ‘The Avengers’ franchise.
‘Doctor Strange’ stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Chewitel Ejiofor, Madds Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton and is directed by Scott Derrickson. The movie releases November 2016.
