Bengali Actor Prosenjit Says Content Is Now King In Bollywood

Bengali Superstar Prosenjit sees shift in status quo of Bollywood films.

Bengali Actor Prosenjit Says Content Driven Films Are Now King

2012 saw the release of a small film by independent filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee (‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy‘) that almost went unnoticed, except to some. Featuring actors like Kalki Koechlin, Emraan Hashmi and Abhay Deol, ‘Shanghai‘ also featured an actor from the Bengali Film Industry, who’s a a pretty big deal in his own right. Superstar Prosenjit has been in over 300 films from the Bengail Industry and will be seen in the upcoming Bollywood release, ‘Traffic’.

The Bengali actor Prosenjit, had a lot of comments about the state of Bollywood, and the shift in the status quo that he believes will benefit the industry in the long term.

In exclusive interviews promoting the ‘Traffic, Prosenjit has stated that the Bollywood film industry is headed for a change with content driven films taking precedence over the masala potboilers. The actor, known himself for block buster commercial films in his own industry, does not undermine those films either. “I am what I am because of the mainstream cinema,” the actor stated. However, he goes onto to mention a change within audiences today that want good story, and not just formulaic aspects or gimmicks to get them into the theatres.

Prosenjit considers a shift in the landscape of mainstream actors as well who are seeking out serious content driven films. He refers to actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar doing films like ‘Fan’, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ‘Airlift’ respectively, as a sign of popular actors choosing films that may not get that much play without their presence, but ones that allow them to feature issue based stories in their films.

This is especially true when you consider the more serious slate of films released this year alone that have been massive successes, critically and commercially. Films like ‘Neerja’ have shown that the Bollywood formula may no longer be completely relevant. Songless films such as ‘Fan’ are topping out the Box Office. Upcoming films like Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal‘ and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s ‘Sarbjit‘ are getting major mainstream attention, despite not being conventionally mainstream. So the Bengali actor definitely has enough evidence in the current state of the industry to prove his statements accurate.

With the past year’s award show controversy, it’s a good time for content driven films to get the spotlight, and the accolades that come with them should definitely follow suit. While the above mentioned star powered films succeeded at the box office, other art-house films like ‘Margarita With a Straw’, ‘Masaan’, and ‘Angry Indian Goddesses‘ were all but ignored in the previous year. If this trend happens to be accurate, then popularity should definitely shift to content driven films, and might even be reflected in the awards shows of next year. One hopes.

Actor Prosenjit, will be seen in the upcoming film ‘Traffic’, releasing May 6th. The film also stars Manoj Bajpayee, Jimmy Shergill & Divya Dutta and is directed by the late Rajesh Pillai.
